Every year a new class joins the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the Hall of Fame floor has to make room for them. When the museum redesigned the floor, which reopened in April 2018, the interactives had to keep up.

The challenge

The floor honors every inductee by class year, with the newest class front and center. Visitors should be able to find any artist, trace their signature, relive their induction, hear the songs that defined their career, and vote for who gets in next.

Behind the scenes, the museum needed every screen to stay current year after year, and the votes visitors cast had to land somewhere useful.

What we built

We built the floor's interactives in Unity:

  • Voting kiosks where visitors pick who they think should be inducted
  • Induction Moments stations, built into the Signature Gallery wall, for watching speeches and performances
  • Inductee Jukeboxes that play each artist's career-defining playlist

Votes and visitor data go to a custom API we built on AWS serverless tools: Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB. Each interactive checks in with a network storage device on site and downloads its own updates, so new content goes out without visiting every screen. The digital signage runs on BrightSign players tied into the building's control system.

The result

Visitors can explore every inductee in the Hall's history, not only this year's class, and the museum's team can keep the whole floor current from one place.
