Escaping Reality Through Code: Building an Immersive Room for Pediatric Oncology

How do you help a child escape the stress and fear of chemotherapy?

That was the challenge presented to our team by the pediatric oncology department at Golisano Children’s Hospital — and an opportunity to use creative technology to bring comfort, joy, and a sense of control to children and their families.

Working in close partnership with d3 Creative Studio and hospital leadership, our team led the software development and technical implementation of a fully immersive projection-mapped treatment room — the first of its kind in Florida, and one of the first in the country.

This space uses synchronized projection mapping, surround sound, and interactive scenes to transport patients beyond the walls of the hospital. With a tap on an iPad, kids can wave to astronauts in space, explore a sunken shipwreck, or relax on a sunny beach — all while receiving chemotherapy.

We designed the experience to be both magical and practical. The entire environment — visuals, lighting, sound, and even interactive games — is powered by a custom-built control system developed by our team. Behind the scenes, the platform integrates projection hardware, audio routing, media playback, and real-time controls to deliver a seamless experience every time.

Patients can choose a relaxing atmosphere or load up a favorite video game. Everything is intuitive, kid-friendly, and nurse-approved.

Our goal wasn’t just to entertain — it was to make the infusion process less intimidating, more empowering, and even something children might look forward to. According to the hospital staff, the biggest challenge now is getting kids to leave the room.

We're proud to have played a part in this project — a powerful reminder that thoughtful technology, when built with compassion, can have a very real impact.
